SSL messes up checkout and account pages

Hi there I am attempting to make my site secure. I have an SSL certificate installed correctly and on a dedicated IP. When I attempt to set it up on my site by changing the config.php and admin>config.php flies and change the admin>setting>server to SSL the checkout pages, account pages and backend all get completely messed up – no formatting and impossible to navigate through – basically the whole site looks a complete mess – no header, no footer, no format, fonts incorrect etc… Any ideas?
