Understanding Shoppica, OpenCart, vQMod, Upgrading

ThemeBurn SupportForumsGeneralGeneral QuestionsUnderstanding Shoppica, OpenCart, vQMod, Upgrading

I have Shoppica 2. I’d like to update my OpenCart and Shoppica, add vQMod, and get an extension for Google Base feeds. Tried it tonight and lost all my Shoppica information. I don’t understand half of what you techies write and muddle through, taking days to do what others can do in hours.

SO……My questions.

1. What’s the best way to go about updating OpenCart (I’m doing it through Softaculous) while maintaining my Shoppica setup?

2. What relationship does Shoppica have with vQMod, if any? E.g., do people use vQMod to install Shoppica?

I just don’t understand the logic on how all these things work together. I can’t comprehend vQMod at all, but I need an extension.

I basically want to be able to continue to install upgrades without have to jump through hoops and redo a bunch of things. Fortunately, Shoppica 2 made my life much easier in that regard.

I would very much appreciate a reply, and one I can understand with limited programming understanding. Thank you.

I also have some questions about VQMOD. I have installed it in order to activate some extra plugins. But none of those plugins are working. So I am wondering if VQMOD is compatible with Shoppica. If not, it would be really nice to let people know before they buy the theme as Vqmod seems to be most needed to have very important functionalities work (coupons for example).

Right now, my coupons are applied to the shopping cart, but not in Paypal, which means that the user still has to pay the full price even though the shopping cart total is reduced.

About your upgrades, I think that you will have to backup your existing settings in order to modify your theme again, once you’ve upgraded. Customisations or code changes are usually not retained after an upgrade. Correct me if I’m wrong.

If anyone can contribute here about Vqmod, it will be much appreciated.

thx.

OK about the coupons, it was not a Vqmod problem, it was due to some code missing in the model/voucher.php file. (found the missing code in Opencart forum)

Still, I have activated a plugin to disable region field in registration and it’s not working with Shoppica – wondering if it’s due to problem with Vqmod.

Please, can somebody explain the relationships among these different programs?

The idea beind VQmod is to keep your extensions running while updating Open Cart to a higher version. So instead of manually altering files in Open Cart for extensions, VQmod uses xml files to alter Open Cart files on the fly. So after an update of Open Cart you could drop an updated xml file (extension) in the vqmod directory.

You can easily update Open Cart first and then Shoppica, all your settings are kept safe allthough Shoppica2 has some new/other settings.

Best thing to do is to have a dummy site where you apply updates and check if all is working well before you would apply it to your live site.

Last but not least if you are satisfied with your shop you should consider the need for updating, like they say: “never change a winning team”!

Also most big stores stick with what they have and rarely update.

@Freemouka, thanks for the detailed explanation. We couldn’t write it better ourselves.

Just to clarify the second question of @nelsongemstones: Shoppica is not vqmod dependent. Vqmod could be used after you install OpencCart and Shoppica.

About your upgrades, I think that you will have to backup your existing settings in order to modify your theme again, once you’ve upgraded. Customisations or code changes are usually not retained after an upgrade. Correct me if I’m wrong.

It always recommended to do a backup before upgrading and this is not only Shoppica related. If you customize a core Shoppica or OpenCart file by hand, there is a good chance this file will be overwritten after the upgrade and your customizations will be gone. This is why vqmod is used, as @Freemouka explained.

Unfortunately, I think what happened was that I upgraded OpenCart through Softaculous and lost my Shoppica settings. I had to restore my old site. Why would my Shoppica settings get overwritten by an OpenCart upgrade?

Thank you all for your explanations. Good to know that upgrading is not necessary.
Now I am really wondering why some Vqmod extensions don’t work at all with shoppica (eg. Custom submenu, region optional). Maybe some kind of clash with other scripts?

Sophieboo, The main reason that some vQmod files do not work with Shoppica is because of code changes within the shoppica files that are different from the default Opencart core files.

Nelsongemstones, When you upgrade Opencart, there are files that should not be copied over if updating rather than installing for the first time, also there is some code that Shoppica needs to be placed in the index.php that will be lost when copying over the newer index.php (hope that makes sense)
The problem when using Softaculous is that what may seem a plus in not having to get into the nitty gritty of having to use ftp to upload the files you lose the control of manually checking everything and leaving certain things out when needed.
Then there are programs that you can buy that allow you to compare changes between files and folders but to be truthful it can become a complex procedure if you are not sure when is needed and what isn’t so really needs a decent understanding of the system.

Personally, I am about to launch a business in the next few weeks that I have had waiting to launch for well over a year! (almost the same type of business as yours in fact! but we are based in the UK and only for the UK for the first year to build trust and decent relationships with our customers) The hard work of the trip to China to meet and find the best suppliers and source the best stock was conducted over a year and a half ago, and its all just waiting for me to open the store.
During this time I have fully immersed myself into everything I needed to know and to learn as much about the Opencart system as best as I could, reading the forum and building a list of information and decent people I could ask questions if I needed to know something I couldn’t find as I wasn’t going to risk launching the website, then losing everything and losing customers trust if I ever did something to the site that I could not fix whilst adding a feature etc…, I know that sounds like a lot of time but in truth I am still learning and most likely will be for a good while yet and I would encourage others to read, read, read and read!
I now know that if anything goes wrong I can fix it very quickly and can concentrate on building the business as it has a strong dependable foundation.

All the best and good luck!!
