Lost Functionality

Hey I just updated from Opencart v.1.4.9.4 to v.1.5.4.1 which all went swimmingly then I got carried away and decided to install the Shoppica layout and, of course, as the files had been upgraded previously, I have now lost all functionality! OOPS! Can anyone offer any advice on a quickfix to repair or the best way to try and get the shop back up and running again. It seemed to go tits up when I altered the index.php file, I got as far as installing the control panel which showed fine in dashboard and with the error message on storefront saying I should add extra lines to index.php etc. I have tried to restore back to how it was but nothing seems to be working for me.
